Press release

The Consul General Mr. Amit Dasgupta hosted a reception for the resident ethnic media at the Consulate yesterday. The Consul General briefed the media persons on the just concluded Indian elections.  He drew their attention particularly to the sheer complexity and size of the electoral exercise.  Around 417 million persons cast their vote (58%) voluntarily; there were 828,804 Polling Stations; counting commenced on May 16 and because India uses the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) the results were known within the day.  CG requested ethnic media to publicise the Indian elections so that Australian and Indian readers are made aware of the scale and success of the operation.

The reception also provided an opportunity to interact with the visiting parliamentary delegation comprising Hon’ble Mr. Yognand Shastri, Speaker of Delhi Legislative Assembly, Hon’ble Dr. Raghuvir Singh Kadian, Speaker of Haryana Legislative Assembly and Hon’ble     Mr. Dharam Lal Kaushik, Speaker of Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly who are in Sydney for the 21st Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, 2009.
